Ayurvedic Yoga Massage combines deep tissue oil massage with assisted yoga stretches, offered here
at We Are Wellness in Headingley, Leeds.

Ayurvedic Yoga Massage is a unique technique that combines deep tissue oil massage with assisted yoga stretches, tailored to suit each client’s needs. Whether you’re seeking something relaxing, energising, soothing, deep, or remedial, the treatment adapts to you.

Developed by Master Kusum Modak in Pune, India, AYM brings together the wisdom of traditional Ayurvedic massage and Iyengar yoga.

This holistic approach works on multiple levels — physical, emotional, mental, and energetic — so every person’s experience is uniquely their own.

What to Expect During a Massage

  • Treatments work with the whole body, focusing on the areas that need the most attention.

  • Sessions begin with an oil massage using hands and feet, gradually warming and softening muscles, fascia, and organs.

  • Breathing techniques are incorporated to help the nervous system release tension, making the process both effective and effortless.

  • We use natural oils along with a fine powder made from the root of Acorus calamus (sweetflag). This creates a gentle exfoliating effect, enhances circulation, warms tissues more quickly, and amplifies the benefits — from detoxification to a deep sense of wellbeing.

The Experience

The oil massage is complemented with gentle mobilisations, tractions, and assisted (passive) yoga stretches. These movements help lengthen the tissues, ease tendons and ligaments, and renew the synovial fluid in the joints. The result is a deep sense of relaxation, release, and renewed energy.

By combining oil massage with mindful movement, we work close to your body’s natural limits on the day — guided by what your body and mind are ready to receive. Using breath awareness throughout the session helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows the body to let go of tension and move into a state of calm.

Tension, when massaged or stretched too strongly, can sometimes cause resistance or agitation. But with mindful touch and deep, relaxed breathing, the nervous system learns to release more easily. Over time, this can retrain the body and mind to respond to life’s stresses with greater ease.

This practice not only brings lasting relaxation and clarity of thought, but also supports the development of body awareness — helping you to listen more deeply to your own body’s needs.
